What color should I paint my furniture?
I already have a navy couch and maroon chairs. I have a coffee table and an endtable that I have to paint. What color though? Furthermore, the apartment I’m moving into will paint an accent wall in my living room, but I only have 4 options: wine, gold, sage, and beige. So…what color should te tables be, and what color should the accent wall be?
I like the color choices of the sofa and chairs and there are actually sooo many options you have to choose from. The first thing you need to decide is the room you want to create. The second is since this is an apartment, rarely are the living, dining and kitchen areas completely separate, so you’ll want to keep in mind any colors visable from those areas as well. Additionally, you don’t mention the flooring. Just guessing, but it’s probably an off white or light beige since most apartments lean towards neutral colors. Sounds complicated but isn’t. Just want the whole look to be cohesive.
The beige is more a neutral color and really wouldn’t be strong enough to make any sort of “accent” for the strong colors you have. The wine is to “if-y”. If it’s truly wine, it will have almost a purple cast to it. And if your chairs are maroon, they will have more of the red so that’s really not a good combination.
The gold or the sage would both work great. I would find an area rug at least the length of your sofa that have all three of these colors boldly in the design whether your preference is contemporary or more traditional. A couple of pieces of wall art in the style would help pull it together. Next, I would add one of the woven throws in a weave using the colors and some interesting toss pillows to the sofa.
I’ve done a couple of tables in some of the new painted finishes that came out pretty sharp. One was the leather look spray enamel you can find at walmart, lowes, etc., (a mustard color would look good with the gold accent wall, something with a deeper brown with the sage green) and when it’s completely dried I trimmed all around the table top in those large brass upholstery tacks. If you are creative, you can even use gold leaf on the top to create an “in-laid” effect seen on the older desks and tables.
Another idea, which I recently used in my daughter’s breakfast nook is the hammered metal spray finish. Again, keep in mind the colors and accessories from the kitchen . Hers was done in a tuscany look, so this finish went well with the bright colors and crockery on display.
Hope this gives you some ideas to start with. You might also consider that it would be just as labor intensive and comparable in cost to restore the wood finish on the tables rather than paint over it. The choice is entirely up to you. Good luck with your move and your project!
