Soundproofing My Basement?

My house is split level so our “basement” does not have a door that closes it off from the rest of the house. There are just stairs that go down to it. My son has a people over a lot on the weekends and it can get pretty loud. I need a way to block the sound from coming upstairs. I was thinking some kind of recording studio foam but that seems pretty expensive, or some kind of portable or adjustable door. I have no idea and Im looking for suggestions.

Start with a DOOR. As long as there is just an open stairway, all the soundproofing in the world won’t help at all. You may be surprised at the difference the door alone makes. You don’t want a ‘portable door’, if there is such a thing. You want a DOOR.

Perhaps the Subhuman’s most sophisticated release, 29:29 Split Vision has quite a variety of music for a band whose songs often all sound the same. The Subhumans even pull off a nearly eight-minute-long tune with a ska beat, “Worlds Apart.” “Walls of Silence” is a great, bouncy, almost danceable number, which covers the usual Subhumans’ themes of apathy, unity, and revolution. “Somebody’s Mother” also attacks apathy, and though the music is excellent, the lyrics are generic. (There were too many punk songs from England in the ’80s about how watching TV and reading tabloid newspapers are bad things.) The Subhumans, though quite eloquent compared to many other punk bands, often took on black-and-white issues. It’s not as if any of their fans would defend conformity or religious wars — subjects of a couple of their songs. An example of this is the song “Think for Yourself,” which basically makes an argument for thinking for yourself. But this tune rocks with its reverby guitar and singer Dick Lukas outraged yelping. As far as their music goes, 29:29 Split Vision (recorded after the band officially broke up) is probably their most mature work. ~ Adam Bregman

This split release is an interestingly bifurcated exercise in retro fetishism. Arizona’s Landmine Marathon revive the early-’90s Earache death metal/grindcore of Napalm Death and Bolt Thrower. However, they have the benefit of hindsight; the sharp performances and assured songwriting are more bracing than their inspirations. Lead growler Grace Perry sometimes sounds like a man, in a good way, but she also lets loose quite a paint-peeling shriek. Backing her scarred throat is a crack team of technicians that roll out catchy riffs, one after the other, as if they came cheap. They don’t, though; Landmine Marathon’s three tracks have more good ideas than most bands’ albums. The Bay Area’s Scarecrow are likewise riff-endowed — perhaps too much so. Essentially, they cram Metallica’s Ride the Lightning into three songs. The result is a bonanza of guitar fireworks that’s startling even in an age of shredders. “The Scum Also Rises” levitates into a ridiculously over-the-top solo that evokes Kirk Hammett on both speed and steroids. “Twilight’s Last Gleaming” alternates its Metallica riffs with Megadeth-esque lead trade-offs. The sound is a little primitive, but the energy is infectious. On paper, these bands are an odd pairing, but they’re really just taking different taxis to the same airport. ~ Cosmo Lee

Full performer name: Mike Seed/Language of Light/Stone Breath.Expanding their side of a split vinyl release with Mike Seed but retaining the same overall title, Stone Breath’s 2011 CD The Aetheric Lamp has the kind of assured flow that comes from not simply exploring a preferred sound but both refining and varying it. That’s little surprise given the band’s lead figure Timothy Renner’s nearly two decades exploring the possibilities in what has been summed up, for convenience’s sake at least, as acid folk; the combination of calm, focused singing and elegantly unusual arrangements remains paramount still, a mixture of the traditional and something other. The opening gambit of “Scorpion Tears,” with a short guitar part suddenly mixed with an insistent banjo rhythm followed by flute, gives further sense of how Renner and company recombine an older style into something that’s a new tradition as such, a music of now rather than then. Hearing the delicate solos throughout “The Voice of the Thunder” helps underscore the further difference between steady re-creation and the flush of new energy, even as the slow, heavy beat and steady singing slowly entrance. The concluding section of “Holywater,” with Renner’s banjo moving faster and faster until it slows and stops over a soft tone, is another strong highlight. Lyrically, Stone Breath focus strongly on senses of time and larger forces than human existence playing out, in language that dwells on various incarnations of religious iconography, delivered in Renner and company’s usual trance/invocation style (to particular effect on “Wingstorm,” vocals providing the anchor while a complex series of melodies intertwine). ~ Ned Raggett

Modernist choreographer Merce Cunningham broke new ground in dance by devising innovative methods of staging sequences. One of his most unique methods involved the employment of “chance procedures” to determine which movements to interpolate within a particular dance. This peaked (and grew most radical) with Cunningham’s authorship of the 2003 “Split Sides.” The piece itself is divided into two twenty-minute movements. In each movement, two different options exist for set design, two for costumes, two for music, two for lighting and two choreography, meaning that the final product can emerge in a multitude of ways. Cunningham devises the particular combinations seen here with several on camera dice rolls prior to each movement.
